“I’m scared.” The young woman whispered into the night sky. There was no one around her and it was silent, eerily so but she ignored it. It was a gorgeous night, not a cloud in the sky and the moon was a waning crescent. For as long as she could remember she had always been fascinated with the moon. There was something mysterious about it, and it was always silvery and pure. The moon was the reason she had gone out on her sixteenth birthday and gotten a silver crescent and a star tattooed on her lower back. Of course her parents didn’t know about it and she had had to bring her birth certificate to prove she was of age, along with a forged slip saying that consent was given. But what’s done is done and there was no going back.

She laughed softly, brought her slender legs up to her chin, wrapped her slim arms around her knees and rested her chin on that perch. Everything about her was small and delicate. She barely reached the height of 5’2” and she was nearing adulthood. She was petite, often mistaken as a child, and she hated it. Twin tears slipped from her eyes and rolled down her porcelain cheeks. “I’m scared and I hate it. There’s something out there, something happening and all I want to do is curl up in a little ball and hide from the world. But I can’t. My own blasted stubbornness won’t let me. I wish that I could go back to being four. The perfect age, you can walk and talk and do things for yourself but there is always someone there to protect you from all the bad things in life.”

The wind ruffled her long glossy brown locks and dried the tears on her cheeks. Melania Donovan sighed and watched the moon in front of her as it hung there, a beautiful orb to guide people at night. She was so entranced that she didn’t hear the footsteps of someone approaching her as she mused aloud to herself. “Fear burns in the heart of every man but it takes someone special to realize it for what it is and to conquer it.”

Gretchen wasn't exactly an early bird...she wasn't at all, really. She didn't wake up early in the mornings, and she sure as hell didn't go to bed early. It was just her nature--she didn't do it. She was a late, night owl, type of girl. Did it make her a crazy, overactive party girl, or something like that? No. Not really, anyway (though she did enjoy the occasional outing, like every teenager).

But she loved nights.

And finding herself alone on this specific one, she decided to take a walk. Her friends seemed to be scarce on this certain night, and sometimes, it was nice to just walk through the chill of the night and let it take over your mind--a blissful silence that let's only your thoughts be voiced, and most often, it's the best way to figure out a problem. Luckily, it wasn't exactly one of those problematic nor dramatic days, nor times. All that was on her mind lately was the fact that it was her last year, and her last chance at memories and freedom.

It was her real last year of adolescence--she planned to enjoy it.

As she walked and thought of this, she spotted a girl, sitting and thinking outloud to herself--which may have seemed odd, had she not noticed it to be none other than her best of best friends--Lani. Well, her name was actually Melania, but to Gretchen, she was just Lani. And she was, again, her best friend. She smiled, and quietly stepped closer, getting a listen in on what she was saying.

"Very true and very deep, Lani," she said as she came and sat down beside Lani, not really caring if she startled her. She smoothed her skirt under her legs, holding her knees up and looking out at the same moon as Lani--damn, it was beautiful, tonight...spooky, too, though she wouldn't dare admit it--before looking over at her friend with a smirk.

"I'd offer a penny for your thoughts, but I guess I got 'em for free, huh?"
((Hope you don't mind me popping in. :)))

To say that Lani hadn’t been started at all would have been a lie. In true character to her form, she squeaked, a high-pitched kind of annoying noise, and turned her head quickly in the direction of the voice. If she had been standing she would have jumped at least two feet in the air and screamed like a banshee. She quickly wiped at her cheeks, trying to rid herself of any traces of tears that might have remained. Then, with hand on her chest, trying to calm her frantically beating heart, the petite brunette addressed her friend of many years. “Holy Merlin Gretchen. Are you trying to give me a heart attack? I have no desire to die before the age of twenty.”

Running a hand through her hair Lani rolled her big green eyes, turning her attention back to the moon. “Just a few thoughts Gretch. Nothing really important, of course. It’s just my late night ramblings. School’s almost over and then we have to go out into the big scary world and try to make our living. I’ll totally take the penny though.” She said with a wide smirk on her face. “Merlin knows that I need it sometimes.”

She was kidding of course and Gretch knew it. Lani wasn’t strapped for cash, and nor was her best friend. It was just part of the way they had grown up. “What are you doing out so late? Couldn’t sleep? Something pressing on your mind? Coming out to meet a mysterious young man?” She was teasing of course for the last question, wiggling her eyebrow to add to the humor.

Lani sighed and leaned back onto the palm of her hands, stretching her legs out in front of her. With the moon still in her mind’s eye she rested her eyes, letting the gentle breeze tickle her arms and legs. In all semblance she looked like she was asleep but in reality she was just thinking, waiting for her bestest friend in the whole wide world to answer her half serious half silly questions.
